Our Commitment to Excellence in the Publishing Process…Step-by-Step
From initial concept to actual printing, McGraw-Hill Education follows multiple steps to ensure
that teachers and students receive materials of the highest quality and with the most up-to-date
information possible. As an integral part of this process, we encourage teachers and students to
submit suggestions and assist us in the creation of premier products.
It often takes three to five years to develop and publish a textbook. To help you understand the
entire publishing process, we have divided it into eight simple steps.
Step One: Deciding on Content

The first step is to assemble various resources, including authors, educational research
teams, professional organizations, and national advisory groups, to identify market trends,
state content standards, and other needs that will influence the program's content. All
decisions at this stage are based on the requirements of the students and educators and a
determination of how best to meet those needs.

Step Two: Research and Planning
 |
Once we determine market issues, we gather research, identify program authors, interview experts,
and examine national and state curriculum requirements and standards. We develop a plan for the
Pupil Edition, Teacher's Edition, and the major ancillaries. This plan includes a content outline,
chapter organization, and page design. In addition, we develop initial prototype pages and evaluate
them through focus tests.

Step Three: Manuscript Development

After the plan is enacted, the editorial team develops detailed outlines, determines writing assignments,
and creates the page and cover designs. We also develop additional materials, including workbooks, tests,
and CD-ROMs. As we work to complete the first draft of the manuscript, experts continually edit and
make revisions.

Step Four: Page Production
 |
With the first draft complete, we once again verify facts, edit copy, and proofread for accuracy.
Now we are able to develop the art and other visual elements that will appear on the printed pages.

Step Five: First Printing
 |
The book next moves into the layout stage, where we place the artwork and photos
onto the pages. Independent reviewers supply feedback on the content and submit
research and accuracy reports. We also incorporate any proofreader corrections
before sending the book to press. We distribute the first printing as samples
to be used only for evaluation.

Step Six: Quality Reviews of First Printing

After the book has been printed and assembled, we distribute it again to the review
committees, authors, proofreaders, and teachers, all of whom check it for accuracy.

Step Seven: Quality Reviews and Reprints
 |
Once the book is printed and in circulation, it is reviewed completely by students,
teachers, academics, review committees, and fact-checkers. All comments and input
on text, photographs, charts, and graphs are compiled for the reprint.

Step Eight: Subsequent Printings
 |
Once all books from the first printing have been distributed, the entire review process
begins again. We post corrections on the specific programs' Web sites. Any comments or
suggestions received from users are welcome and are considered for later printings.
